Lisbon’s Oldest
Irish Pub
O’Gilins Irish Pub was established in 1995 but only opened its doors for the first time on March 14, 1996, just days before Saint Patrick's Day that year. Founded by Conor Gillen, an Irishman enchanted by Lisbon, the pub embodies a cultural bridge between Ireland and Portugal. Conor built O’Gilins with his own hands, using reclaimed solid wood, and with the help of family, friends, and neighbours.
Before becoming the beloved Irish pub it is today, the location was home to the infamous Atlantic Bar, a hotspot for sailors when Cais do Sodré was Lisbon's red-light district. Today, O’Gilins is known for its live music every night, featuring the resident band Melting Pot on weekends.
The pub is a cultural landmark filled with historical décor, including vintage birdcages and art pieces gifted by patrons. Conor maintains an archive of records and photographs from the time when the pub was the Atlantic Bar, preserving the rich history of the space. Recognised with the distinction of "Loja com História" by the Câmara de Lisboa, O’Gilins continues to be a cherished spot, offering a warm, authentic Irish experience in the heart of Lisbon.
O’Gilins has also been a stage for memorable moments, including an impromptu performance by Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam, who played a couple of songs on a Friday night. Additionally, the pub is known for its passionate support of Celtic FC, Rugby and the GAA, making it a favourite spot for sports fans. These elements contribute to the pub’s rich tapestry of stories and its reputation as a beloved venue for locals and visitors alike.
